UEFA Slots are the group stage slots that European clubs can win to qualify for the Champions League. Currently, teams from the top three tiers of a domestic association can win up to four guaranteed slots in the group stage.
But UEFA is mulling a plan to expand the number of slots available to ensure more teams from all over Europe get a shot at winning the tournament, according to three people familiar with the plans who spoke on condition of anonymity. The move would allow the top four teams from each of the continent’s leading leagues to bypass their qualifying rounds and go straight through to the group stage สล็อตยูฟ่า.
This expansion,
which is aimed at encouraging more participation from non-traditional leagues,
will mean each club will be guaranteed 10 group-stage games instead of six,
these people said. That means teams like Manchester City could face a more
challenging schedule than they have in recent years.
The new format for
the Champions League will also be based on sporting merit, with qualification
based on performance rather than history. That was the decision of UEFA
President Aleksander Ceferin.
One of the biggest
concerns about this change is that it will favor teams from stronger leagues
and make it easier for the bigger clubs to qualify, while making the
competition less competitive overall.
Previously, access
to the Champions League was granted based on the club’s UEFA coefficient score.
Those scores were based on the team’s performance in five previous seasons of
the European Cup and the UEFA Champions League.
But this system was
criticised by a number of European football associations, as it made the
competition less open and gave more advantage to stronger teams. Several of the
European club governing bodies sent a letter to UEFA asking it to guarantee
that future access will be based on historical achievements, not league
positions.
After a long debate,
UEFA eventually agreed to this proposal, with the top four European
associations getting four guaranteed group-stage slots for the next cycle. But
that will be supplemented by three more slots for clubs that don’t finish in
the top four of their domestic leagues, according to the people who were
involved with the discussions.
Another additional
slot will be awarded to a country that ranks fifth in UEFA’s national
association coefficient list, as well as the champion of the 'Champions Path'.
This will be an additional opportunity for Prem clubs to get into the
competition and earn extra prize money.
This will not only
give Prem clubs an opportunity to qualify for the European Cup but will also
help to promote stronger, more unified soccer in England.
Having a larger
group stage would also help to improve the standard of play in Europe’s top
competition, with teams facing an increased number of matches before they reach
the knockout stages. That is why FIFA’s plans to reduce the number of group
stages from eight to four were rejected by UEFA in favour of the current plan.
